Tucker Malarkey is a best-selling author and conservationist whose work spans fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and environmental storytelling. A graduate of Georgetown University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, she is the author of three novels and Stronghold: One Man’s Quest to Save the World’s Wild Salmon. Her writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and other publications. She is also the founder and creative director of Live Migrations, a new global initiative bringing the natural world’s great migrations to audiences live and in real time.
Stronghold tells the remarkable story of conservationist Guido Rahr and his decades-long effort to protect the world’s last great wild salmon rivers—from the Russian Far East and Alaska to the Pacific Northwest. Part adventure story, part family story, and part urgent environmental history, the book explores the extraordinary life cycle of wild salmon and what it takes to preserve the rivers, cultures, and communities that depend upon them.
Live Migrations grew from that same belief in the power of direct connection with the natural world. Through live cameras, natural sound, scientific and Indigenous knowledge, and a worldwide viewing community, the project allows people to witness great wildlife migrations as they unfold. Its inaugural broadcast, The Great Sockeye Migration, brought the return of Bristol Bay’s wild salmon to viewers on five continents.
